Turismo Social

Trips with a purpose

The Interdisciplinary Social Anthropology Team (Equipo Interdisciplinario de Antropología Social, EIAS) investigates and develops tourism routes in Mexico and abroad, following the model of Turismo Social.

In contrast to the predatory tourism of large chains, we believe in the need for a world without exploitation (whether of people or of nature), in which one does not need to be wealthy to travel, and in which, through our travels, we can learn and become more aware of the need to respect and support local communities and their forms of organization.

Trips with a Purpose

During our trips designed for large, medium, and small groups, we always aim to construct a relationship of both respect and support for local communities, guiding and raising the awareness of our travelers so that they may make the most of their experience, on the one hand, and so that they may understand what type of donations can be useful for the community.

Tour Operators

Established as a Non-Profit, Civil Society Organization in 2012, we have the capacity to be medium-scale tour operators, at both the national and international level. We offer group trips (for groups of up to 50 individuals) every month of the year.

Tour Operators in Mexico

Independent of our work in touristic zones where other tour operators tend to be, we are unique in our focus on social concerns, including: the defense of terrain in Cuetzalan, Puebla and in Jalcomulco, Veracruz, the latter visited during our Coffee Route (Ruta del Café); environmental conservation, as experienced in the Huasteca Potosina region; the preservation of Mexican culture and traditions, experienced during our trip to Tlacotalpan, Veracruz and during the Day of the Dead Route (Ruta de Día de Muertos) to Patzcuaro, Michoacan; and outreach to indigenous peoples, as emphasized through our visits with the Raramuri and Mayo Yoreme peoples during our trip to the Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre; among many others). Furthermore, during every trip, we seek to foster supportive relationships with cooperatives and small producers.

International Tour Operators

Additionally, in our international group trips, we follow the Turismo Social Model, as evidenced by our work with indigenous communities emphasized during our circuits in Perú (all while visiting Machu Picchu and the Rainbow Mountain) and, more emblematically, through our solidarity with Cuba where, in addition to donating medications and school supplies, we offer programs that allow our travelers to discover such elements as the achievements of the Cuban medical system, educational institutions, artists and cultures, as well as its natural marvels and unique history.

Network of Community and Rural Vendors, Cooperatives, and Social Tourism

We have a network of alliances that allows us to respond to the widest array of traveler needs. Regardless of the size of the group or the dates requested, we are able to sustainably coordinate hotels and transportation, as well as tours.

Receptive Tourism

Our central offices are located in Mexico City, thereby allowing us to receive groups from any country and to offer travel programs throughout the entire country (as well as programs departing from Mexico City to other countries), directly and with the support of our network of community and rural vendors, cooperatives, and social tourism.

Provider Offering a Vast Array of Trips

In addition to our principal Turismo Social Circuits, we offer more than 100 national circuits, and many more international circuits to all destinations across the world.

Designing Unique Trips

Through our network of community vendors, we design trips to scale, ranging from one person to large groups, designing personalized experiences in agreement with the model of Turismo Social.

At Turismo Social, we promote ways to travel that improve the living conditions of local communities and their cooperatives, from a committed, anthropological vision rooted in activism. From our point of view, a trip is the perfect excuse to make us aware of our relationship with nature, and of the need to commit ourselves to making the world a better place.
